OPEN Sprint Canoe/Kayak HEAD COACH POSITION for 2017 season

Job Overview:
Head coach is responsible for planning, coaching and leadership/management of the clubs established
+10 year sprint canoe/kayak programs. Boats (C1, C2, K1, K2, and K4) are Olympic style. Primary
responsibilities are in spring and summer with limited club business and planning in off season. Position
is +5 hours per week in spring and +12 hours per week in summer (plus trips to training and racing

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of this position shall consist of, but not be limited to, the following:
· Work with Club Programming Director regarding:
o Scheduling and Logistics
o Planning competition schedule
· Promote athlete development
o Establish training programs that help athletes achieve individual goals
o Work with assistant coaches and athletes to monitor athlete progress
o Measure and keep records of athlete personal milestones including time trials as well as
strength and power tests
· Be a role model, promoting club values:
o All Club paddle sports as lifetime activities
o Teamwork and individual personal growth
o A healthy lifestyle
· Coach a minimum of six to eight training sessions per week for the Sprint 0, 1 and 2 (elite) teams (4-
5 sessions in the spring) with dates and times based on school, athletes and coaches schedules
o Include a combination of morning and afternoon practices on water
o Strength/agility training will be included in practice sessions
· Coach team at scheduled regattas (usually at least 4 per season)
· Organize and coach team events, including:
o Annual spring break training trip and other local events
· Work with Board of Directors
o Prepare and present updates at monthly board meetings when requested
o Provide advice on acquisition of equipment and working with community partners
· Manage and help recruit volunteer coaches as needed

Minimal Qualifications:
· Proven experience as a coach and leadership in a club sports program
· Proven ability to develop a positive working relationship with paddlers of all ages and abilities,
parents, other club coaches and board of directors
· Strong interpersonal skills working with youth
· Strong written and oral communication skills
· Current first aid and CPR certification

· Valid driver’s license with ability to pull a boat trailer

Preferred Qualifications:
· 2+ years’ experience in paddle sports as athlete and/or coach
· Certification such as ICF (International Coach Certification) RCBC is able to support coaches
· 2+ years’ experience in para canoe coaching

The mission of the Rice Creek Boat Club is to provide a semi-structured opportunity for middle and high
school age youth (12-18 years) to learn or enhance skills for flat water paddling and racing, and provide
a low impact summer cross-training opportunity particularly suited for youth athletes. The goal, plain
and simple, is to introduce youth athletes to competitive paddling during the warm months. Paddling is
excellent cross-training; it builds upper body and core strength without impact or staying in the gym on
nice summer days.
